High and Low

I'm not afraid to go
High and low
High and low (x2)

This song is about the blurring of the high and low
The why and how of why I create so
I'm explaining it now, and just so you know
This could be some sort of a manifesto
As the Modernists said, the new is still gold
So artists go places that others might not go
If Now believes that there's no God on high to behold him
Then another idea is to go far far below him
Think of Shakespeare and Dickens in the days of old
Or the packets of tobacco in the works of braque and picasso
Duchamp's elevation of a urinal
Or Mapplethorpe capturing with the demimonde
And Koons' blow up toys that you just can't blow
They all involve the blending of the high and low
And the benefit for all of those who practice it
Is that you can be critical and ironic and still stay accessible, so...

I'm not afraid to go
High and low
High and low (x2)

Let's face it, art no longer has aspirations
To guide, to teach, or to elevate one's station
And a surface is worth it, but it's worthwhile to mention
That in the absence of a higher goal, all that's left is pretension
And so I trawl the gutter for all that's forgotten
Misdirected, mislaid, or misbegotten
Overturning shiny things for something rotten
The top and sides are clean, but what's on the bottom
Might be more interesting, like roses can sting
It's the pleasure and the pain that makes a voice sing
It's the sun and the rain that are eternally linked
It's the Sacred and profane that give my art distinction
In fact, at this point does anyone think, son
That most of what we call high culture doesn't stink, son
I'm raising Low and bringing High back from the brink, and
Saving artistic expression from extinction
Whew! That was a mouthful
But I did it for you

I'm not afraid to go
High and low
High and low (x2)

How low can you go? (x16)

I'm not afraid to go
High and low
High and low (x2)
